New Year’s Dental Health Resolutions for 2024 with Dr. Michelle DeFelice Hucke of Jax Beaches Family Dentistry

As 2023 winds down and we head into the New Year, many of us start thinking about resolutions. While losing weight and exercising more often top the list, dental health goals are some of the easiest and most rewarding resolutions you can actually achieve in 2024.

We recently sat down with Dr. Michelle DeFelice Hucke, proud owner of Jax Beaches Family Dentistry and longtime resident of St. Johns County, to talk about how small changes in your dental habits can make a big difference in your health and quality of life.

Resolution #1: Schedule Regular Dental Cleanings

It’s easy to let years slip by without a professional cleaning—but this year, make it a priority.

How often should you have your teeth cleaned?

  • At least twice a year for most people.

  • More often if you’ve had multiple birthdays (meaning your dental needs increase as you age).

Dr. Michelle points out that one of the biggest advantages of scheduling cleanings is built-in accountability. Once your next appointment is on the calendar, you’re far more likely to follow through.

Resolution #2: Stop Putting Off Dental Procedures

Have you been delaying a crown, filling, or more advanced procedure? The New Year is the perfect time to move forward.

Many people forget they can use HSA (Health Savings Account) or FSA (Flexible Spending Account) dollars for dental care. Starting fresh in January gives you a chance to plan your benefits wisely.

Dr. Michelle recommends beginning with a new patient exam to create a personalized treatment plan. This helps ensure you don’t set aside too much—or too little—money for your dental needs in 2024.

Resolution #3: Address Snoring & Sleep Health

If your spouse has been nudging you about snoring, it’s time to take it seriously. While medical providers don’t offer many solutions for primary snoring (snoring not linked to sleep apnea), dentistry does.

Dentists can provide custom oral appliances that reduce snoring, promote healthier breathing, and help couples avoid the dreaded “sleep divorce.” Better sleep equals better health—and a happier home.

Resolution #4: Get Serious About Gum Health

According to Dr. Michelle, one of the best New Year’s resolutions you can make is to take charge of your gum health.

Why? Because gum disease doesn’t just affect your mouth—it’s linked to heart health and cardiovascular disease. When gums are inflamed or bleed during cleanings, bacteria can enter your bloodstream and increase health risks.

A great way to fight gum disease is through treatments like Perio Protect trays, which deliver medication below the gum line and reduce bacteria. Healthy gums = a longer, healthier life.

Why Dental Resolutions Matter

Unlike vague goals like “get healthier,” dental resolutions are concrete, trackable, and impactful. Scheduling regular cleanings, addressing gum issues, or finally fixing that tooth you’ve been avoiding will not only improve your smile—it will improve your overall health and confidence in 2024.
