If you have dental insurance, the end of the year is one of the most important times to make the most of your benefits. Many people don’t realize that their dental insurance coverage resets on January 1, and any unused benefits from this year will disappear.
Dr. Michelle D. Felicki of Jax Beaches Family Dentistry in Jacksonville Beach joined us recently to share helpful insights on how to get the most from your dental plan — and why acting before December 31 can save you money (and prevent future dental problems).

Understanding How Dental Insurance Works
Dr. Michelle explained that dental insurance isn’t like traditional medical insurance. Instead of unlimited coverage, most dental plans give you a fixed annual maximum — usually around $1,500 per year.
“That’s money you can use between January 1 and December 31,” says Dr. Michelle. “If you don’t use it, it doesn’t roll over — it just disappears.”
So if you’ve been putting off a dental exam, cleaning, or treatment, now is the perfect time to schedule. By visiting before the end of the year, you can use your remaining 2025 benefits — and then start fresh with another $1,500 (or whatever your plan provides) in 2026.
That means you can split treatment between two benefit years and pay less out-of-pocket.
Why You Should Schedule Before December 31
Waiting until January could literally cost you money. Once December 31 passes, any unused benefits are gone — and that’s like shredding a $1,500 check.
If you haven’t been to the dentist in a while, schedule a comprehensive exam and cleaning before the end of the year. Most insurance policies cover these at 100%, so you’ll likely pay nothing out-of-pocket.
Your dentist can then create a treatment plan that allows you to:
- Use your remaining 2025 benefits now,
- And start using your new 2026 benefits right after January 1.
That’s smart dental budgeting — and it keeps your mouth healthy heading into the new year.

FSA and HSA: What You Need to Know
If your employer provides an FSA (Flexible Spending Account), keep in mind that those funds also expire at the end of the year. Any unused money will be lost.
Now is a great time to check your balance and use your funds for dental work, eyeglasses, eye exams, or other health-related services.
If you have an HSA (Health Savings Account), the rules are different. That money rolls over year to year and can be used for a wide range of medical expenses — including dental treatments, chiropractic care, and even some massage therapies.
Dr. Michelle says many of her patients combine their dental insurance, FSA, and HSA funds to make the most of their coverage and get their necessary dental work done affordably.
Open Enrollment: Choosing the Right Dental Plan
Fall is also open enrollment season for most companies, Medicare plans, and individual policies. Choosing a dental plan can be confusing, but your trusted local dentist can help.
“If you already go to a dental office you trust,” says Dr. Michelle, “ask them for help understanding which plans make sense for you. You don’t want to pick one that restricts where you can go.”
Your insurance coordinator at your dental office can review your options and help you avoid plans that limit your choices or make it harder to see your preferred provider.
Don’t Wait — Avoid Dental Pain During the Holidays
Nobody wants to deal with a toothache on Christmas Day. Taking advantage of your remaining dental benefits now can help prevent pain, infection, and emergency visits later.
If you’ve been delaying dental work, don’t wait until it becomes urgent. Scheduling your exam or treatment now helps ensure you’re pain-free and smiling confidently through the holidays.
